The
Shingle Mill
In 1901, George Moffatt constructed a shingle mill on the east
side of Rock Island Street (now Van Horne St.). In 1902, he sold the mill to the Dalhousie Lumber Company, and they
operated the mill until 1927, when it was purchased by the
International Paper Company to obtain the land for the present
paper mill.

Dalhousie Lumber Company Mill

In 1908, Arthur Hilliard constructed a saw and rossing mill
on the site of the old shipping sheds.
In 1909, International Paper obtained a share in the
mill. In 1914, it was under the management of W.H.
Priest, and then that of E.A. Rocket in 1924.
During the peak season, it
employed approximately 100 men.
The company logged both sides of the Restigouche River.
The mill operated until 1928, when it was demolished
to make way for the present mill.
The
P.Q. Lumber Company Mill
In 1917, two Americans, Charles Payne and George C. Scott,
began constructing a lumber mill at the site of the present
Pioneer Plant. The mill was completed in 1919, and had an
annual output of 10,000,000 board feet.
Early managers during the construction stage and operation
years were : M. Hussy, Mr. Seber, Mr Scott, Mr G.S. Grimmer
and Mr. Fraser.
The
Restigouche Wood-working Factory
In 1906, the Restigouche Wood-working Factory was formed by
William Montgomery and Robert Blackhill.
In that year, they built a sash and door factory on
the corner of William and Van Horne Streets.
The factory was destroyed by fire in April, 1907.
